❤️‍🩹 People Helped:

📖 Definition

  • Bipolar Type I — Characterised by manic episodes including euphoria, increased energy, and impulsive behaviours. Manic episodes can be preceded or followed by hypomanic or major depressive episodes.
  • Bipolar Type II — Characterised by patterns of depressive episodes and hypomania, but without the full psychosis experience of bipolar I.
  • Rapid Cycling — A high frequency of mood episodes (at least four) over the past 12 months. This is what I have.

The two poles are elevated moods and depressive moods. Everyone is different but generally an elevated mood lasts for at least several days and a depressive mood is present for most of the day for at least two weeks.

🚀 Manic (9–10)

Bipolar UK Scale 9–10: Severe mania — hospitalisation often needed. Gross overactivity, flight of ideas, marked disinhibition, little or no sleep. Grandiose delusions, possible hallucinations. Unaware of own condition.

Recommendations

🚨 Freeze all bank cards, stop everything, stay inside.

😄 Elevated / Hypomanic (7–8)

Bipolar UK Scale 7–8: Elevated mood, marked overactivity, reduced need for sleep (but not absent), increased energy, libido and confidence. Impulsive decisions. Still partially functional but judgement impaired.

Recommendations

🧠 Think before doing something. Wait a while before making any decisions.

😊 Good / Stable (5–6)

Bipolar UK Scale 5–6: Normal, stable mood. Good energy, motivation and concentration. Able to function well at work and socially. Sleep pattern normal. This is the target state.

Recommendations

✅ Enjoy the moment. Keep things in check.

😐 Neutral (4)

Completely stable. No signs of mania or depression. Slight withdrawal and less concentration but manageable day to day.

Bipolar UK Scale 4: Slightly below normal — mild withdrawal, slightly low mood but still coping day to day. No major impairment.

Recommendations

✅ This is the baseline. Enjoy it.

😔 Low (2–3)

Bipolar UK Scale 2–3: Mild to moderate depression — low mood, fatigue, poor concentration, loss of interest and motivation. Withdrawing socially. Getting through the day but struggling.

Recommendations

💙 Cognitive strategies. Get outside. Play games. Love yourself. Try not to withdraw entirely.

🌧️ Depressed (0–1)

Bipolar UK Scale 0–1: Severe depression — unable to function, possible suicidal thoughts or self-harm. Urgent support needed. Tell someone you trust or call 999 / Samaritans 116 123.

Recommendations

🆘 Tell someone. It's OK not to be OK right now.
